This wall hanging or table runner/topper combines a collection of different stylized Dresden plates in varying sizes appliqued onto a solid or pieced backing. It takes the old-fashioned Dresden Plate and kicks it up a notch. You will learn how to make double-pointed Dresden wedges, flying geese wedges, and pieced wedges then applique them to a background. When you make double-pointed wedges you will not need to make that little circle applique button in the middle of the plate to hide the raw edges.

Make your project special by using your own color selection, plate variety and placement, applique method, and background quilted piece.

Using the 18-degree template/ruler you will need 20 wedges for a full plate, 15 wedges for a ¾ plate, 10 wedges for a ½ plate or 5 wedges for a ¼ plate. You will be able to create a beautiful project with layer cakes, fat quarters and/or yardage. In order to get multiple sized plates, you will need a variety of strips.

Skill level: During this project we will be creating a variety of stylized Dresden plates and appliqueing them onto a background. Skill level of the participants is intermediate. It requires accurate cutting and ¼” seams. There will also be some simple paper piecing for some of the plate variations. More than five different plate designs will be covered in the class. You choose the ones and sizes you want to use on your project to make it special.

Fabrics:
• Approximately 1-yard background fabric, size to match the type of project you want to make. (this can also be pieced in various whites, creams or greys to compliment your plates)
• Multiple coordinating fabrics (recommend a variety of colors. using half-yard collections or fat quarters). You may also might want to make your project totally scrappy. If your project will be scrappy, you will need scraps of at least 2¾”wide for a 5”tall wedge. Keep in mind that a plate made with an 18-degree ruler requires 20 wedges. As an example, 20-6” wedges make a 14” plate; a 40” WOF cut in 6” strip produces 21 wedges (1 plate) Basically bring plenty of fabric because you will change your mind as we progress through the class
• At least ½ yard light fusible interfacing to stabilize the center button and rounded edges
• Sufficient batting and binding for the size project you are making Supplies and Tools:
• 18-degree Dresden ruler
• Your favorite ruler to mark your background and cut strips of fabric (6”x24”)
• A good working sewing machine with ¼” foot and new needle
• Sharp rotary cutter
• Thread for piecing
• Thread for applique (monofilament top thread for topstitching is recommended unless you will be using decorative stitches for applique)
• Hand needles for applique (if doing hand applique)
• Pins
• Erasable marking pen or chalk
• Spray starch (accurate cutting ensures that your plates fit)
• Purple Thang (optional) or some other tool that will help you make sharp points
• Rotating cutting mat (optional)
• Any other standard sewing supplies

Skill Level: Intermediate
Skill Details: A beginner class will be taught from a first-time perspective. Intermediate and advanced courses require previous experience with sewing, quilting, and embroidery. These skill levels should be considered when you are registering for a course in consideration of the other attendees who will have expectations of the named skill level and would not require the instructor to teach basic skills during an advanced course or go faster/skip instruction during a beginner course. All attendees are responsible for bringing a sewing machine in good working order and knowing how to operate it. Instruction focuses on cutting (when noted), sewing techniques, and assembly of the project.
Materials Included: Ironing and cutting stations will be provided. Use of personal irons is limited due to availability of power outlets.
Instructor: Anne Johnson
Instructor Bio: Anne Johnson is a quilter from a family of needleworking women. Her grandmother was a knitter extraordinaire and mother was a seamstress who made clothing for her five daughters. Growing up in Miami, FL did not lend itself to thoughts of quilting, but fabric has always been a part of her life. Anne’s foray into needle arts began in Girl Scouts and Home Economics like many other quilters. When the other students were making aprons, Anne made a pant suit with welted pockets. When she learned to crochet, she didn’t make a potholder, she made an afghan. But once she started sewing clothing, she didn’t stop making clothing for herself and her family until her sons were teenagers. In the early years of personal computers and her sons were small, Anne watched a kid’s science program that talked about using a computer to design a quilt. The idea of quilting and technology was born. Anne returned to college to get a degree in technology and education. After spending more than 30 years teaching clients to use software and computers to build their businesses Anne retired and returned to her needlework roots. Anne began making quilts and building on her small fabric stash. Fast forward to the past 5 years, Anne has built her stash, served on the board of Flying Needles Quilt Guild, taught a number of workshops and presented on topics of interest to quilters. Anne is always up for a new challenge, whether it is a new technique or a more complex quilt design. The challenge of the puzzle is what she makes her tick and she loves to spread the fun of quilting to others.
